Zen and the art of introspection

Today’s Daily Post prompt wants me to do this: Tell us a moment or an incident that you treasure — not necessarily because it brought you happiness, but because it taught you something about yourself.

There are a lot of moments in my life where I learned something truly valuable about myself, and I’m not sure that many of them brought me immediate happiness; the happiness only came later, when I was able to apply the lesson learned in order to bring myself some degree of satisfaction in later, applicable situations.

I could try to dredge up something specific, but I can’t think of anything at the moment. But maybe all of my life is like that. I wouldn’t change a thing about it because I like where I am and I really wouldn’t want to jeopardize that by wishing that ‘this’ might have been or ‘that’ had gone better. Not only do I take my lumps but I somehow managed to let the regret fade and become a part of the better person that I am now.

So in a manner of speaking, I should treasure every moment, because each one teaches me something about myself, even if it is just the fact that yes, I am still very much alive; if I am not 100% happy at that moment, eventually I will have a good reason for that as good fortune finds me well.
