You can’t keep a golden hour nailed down!

Do you know what the “golden hour” is?

Apparently, there’s a couple of times during the day that have been named by the photography field; there’s the blue hour, where the sun has just gone down or is just about to rise, and it’s neither light nor dark and the sky is often lit up in intense blues; then there’s this time called the golden hour, specifically the first and last hour of daylight in the day. The sun’s coming up, and all the colors you can capture are soft and warm to the touch. I do love this time of day, and I often find myself photographing the sky to the extent that I think I’m dumb for doing it at all.

And so the Daily Post goes, “6:00AM: the best hour of the day, or to close to your 3:00AM bedtime?” First of all, Daily Post, I’d like to offer my condolences for your misinformation. I go to bed around midnight and I wake up around 5:00 am. I am awake for the golden hour, but when is it happening at 6:00 am? In North Dakota, this is an all-too-fleeting six weeks from late May to early July, when the sun wakes up almost as early as I do, bottoming out at about ten minutes to six in mid-June. Right now, according to the handy-dandy Intemajigger-webamabob our sunrse is at 8:18 am. So here’s the thing: I’m usually at work by that time.

How depressing is it to go to work in complete darkness? Remember last year, when I was going to work in complete darkness and leaving in complete darkness because I was working ten- to twelve-hour shifts? Okay, so I wasn’t really blogging then, but that was the case. I started hitting the vitamin D pretty hard, and that did wonders for my mood. Now that I’m off the sunshine vitamin I’ve managed to stay pretty stable in terms of mood, but I do miss the sun’s extended presence – which is weird, because I like dim light, too. If you want me to define a best hour of the day it would have to be what I’ll call the silver hour, when you feel like you’ve retired and you can just enjoy your life with your family. Some time after you come home from work and have fully decompressed, and before you realize that soon you go to bed, and then it’s all over – you’re going to have to get up in the morning and do it all over again. That’s the silver hour, the best hour of the day.

This post was prompted by today’s Daily Post prompt.

  1. There have been many times when I have left to work in the dark and returned in the dark. It would ruin my whole day. My favorite time of day depends on if I have to work or not.

  2. You’ve hit upon something, Surf-man. Yea, the ‘silver hour,’ could be any ‘time.’ For me, it’s more of a feeling, a calmness, almost a lethargy, can’t do anything about it except maybe change yer attitude. So lean back, put on some Mississippi blues, and laugh at your silly cat trying to catch a hummingbird. Yeah, Silver Time, dude.

      • It’s all about women, man. Dangerous, delectable, delightful, deranged. There’s Tina, 3 o’clock in the morning, and then there’s some poor fool askin’ for someone to lay ‘my palette down.’ Silver time, poor Michelle with her silly forelock, me with my incredibly tiny script on this stupid machine which I have no idea how to remediate. Shee-it: Two glasses of Spanish wine and I start talking like a teacher. Must be Sunday, everybody’s tellin’ the truth…Then again it might be Monday, everybody’s tellin’ the …………dHah!
